We’re All Happy Staffers
The gravel on the camp road shifted under spinning tires yesterday morning as the super staff of summer 2019 rolled in. I watched from my tree as returning counselors greeted each other with glee, and I couldn’t help but smile real big at the Boo Whoop welcome the new staffers received. I could tell from the excitement: we were off to a great start to another amazing summer under Old Bald! The notorious name games, extra intense battles of rock, paper, scissors, and lunch for the new staff took place in Chapel yesterday afternoon.
Later that day, I snuck into castle where Lindsay gave a brief history of our place of rarest beauty. She included some information about me, and I blushed while sitting up in drama’s crow’s nest. Luckily, no one saw me. At cookout, I had my luck in securing a delicious burger cooked by the finest activity heads in camp! I sat and ate while counselors and staff reconnected on the waterfall field. Wow, did it feel good to have camp come back to life!
We followed the gleam into campfire where senior staff and our campfire band led us in song. You could feel the rekindling of the Merrie-Woode spirit in every ember flickering off the fire. The new staff sang along with the counselor choir to some of camp’s most treasured songs, including “Remember,” (my favorite!). As staff sashayed out to “Shiney Miney,” I scampered back into the brush to catch some Z’s, but not before hearing the summer’s first rendition of “Taps.”
This beautiful Tuesday morning came with our first full counselor breakfast of the summer. We even had a birthday at lunch! I may or may not have had a bite of the cake, but shh, don’t tell anyone. John Brantley, a beloved Merrie-Woode icon, led staff in a team bonding activity. The gals and (few) guys laughed and danced and connected cheerfully.
After dinner, staff rolled on down to Rockin’ Bowl where they took over the alleys with striking grace. I hitched a ride atop one of the buses. The lanes were buzzing with excitement and I kept my low profile amongst the dancing and comradery. The well-exhausted counselors fell short of noticing me as I rode back with them to camp. Orientation is off to a rockin’ start, and I couldn’t be happier to be woken up to the sound of summer.
The mountains were calling, and the happy staffers answered. It’s merrie to be back.
Strikingly,
Tajar
