Calling Merrie-Woode Girls of All Generations!
Calling all Merrie-Woode girls, ages 8 to 82! Come join us for the 2015 CMW Mother & Daughter Weekend!
This was absolutely one of the highlights of last year for me! I can’t tell you how much fun it was to open camp up to mothers and daughters of all ages, all with a passion and connection to this place we love so much. Some mothers were here with young girls experiencing camp for the first time. Others were old hat at the camp experience, but were seeing it with fresh eyes as they shared camp together.
The whole weekend was stacked with awesome activities. Campfire, s’mores, a Castle devotional led by Senior Staff, a beautiful Chapel service…these were just some of the highlights! On that Saturday morning we led a perfect hike up Old Bald. We made good time and the midday spring view from the ledge was simply breathtaking. It was, perhaps, one of my favorite hikes I’ve taken up the mountain in all my years here. I will, however, say that a six-year-old outpaced me the entire way up! While sitting on the rock face, we saw a hawk flying right at eye level. After enjoying a terrific lunch on top of the mountain, we all started back down again. Three generations hiked Old Bald that day: daughter, mother, and grandmother! Pretty impressive!
After our hike everyone headed to their afternoon activities. Folks enjoyed boating and paddle boarding on Lake Fairfield, shooting archery, and making some awesome birdhouses in Arts & Crafts.
Evening Program was a riot! Moms and daughters teamed up in small groups for an evening of “Bag Skits!” Each team grabbed a big bag filled with random props and costume pieces. They worked together to create a skit that featured every single item in the bag, no matter how weird or ridiculous! Chaos and hilarity quickly ensued! After Bag Skits we enjoyed a treat of milk and cookies in the Dining Hall, complete with a fireside reading of a Tajar Tale, read by JP and myself. (JP did a pretty impressive Ranger Ranger impersonation. And I’ve been perfecting my Tajar voice for years.) All in all, a pretty good camp night.
I can’t wait for this spring’s Mother & Daughter Weekend. In the cold and grey of February, I’m ready for the first big kick-off to the camp season…when spring has settled in, the dogwoods are blooming, and the days start to get longer again. I hope to see many more faces this year, both returning and new! It really is the perfect camp weekend…a great retreat to your old camping days to share with your mothers and sisters, aunts and cousins.
