OUR HEARTS WILL TURN BACK TO MERRIE-WOODE…
Music blasted from the docks all day today as Proficiency Day was underway. This day is dedicated to the girls who are finishing up levels in the boating program. Canoes and kayaks were maneuvering expertly about as girls showed off the skills they have been learning all summer. After chatting with The Lady of the Lake about all of the strong paddlers we have here on Lake Fairfield, I headed back to the boathouse to put up my gear and brainstorm a fun prank to play on her this evening.
During my morning paddle, I worked up quite an appetite. I heard chatter over at Lily Pad, and I stopped by on my way to the Dining Hall. Lo and behold, I arrived just in time for the all E pizza party! At the end of every session, cabins who receive good scores on their cabin cleanliness inspection get to celebrate with a special lunch. I am very tidy and keep my tree in tip top shape, so I rewarded myself with a slice of pizza and a coke float! It was delicious!
After filling my Tajar tummy with pepperoni goodness, I continued my stroll around camp. Rest hour was a bit gloomy, because all of the girls were packing away many their belongings. I watched as precious projects from arts and crafts, jewelry. and ceramics were stowed safely in boxes and nestled into trunks.
The best part of my day was Closing Campfire, a traditional evening program held in the campfire ring. Forty-three girls received their silver Merrie-Woode bracelets. The bracelet is given to campers once they have been at camp for seventeen weeks, or six summers (whichever comes first). Each bracelet is engraved with the initials of the camper and symbolizes a special relationship with this place we love so dearly. Bracelets remind girls to go back into their cities without faltering and carry on the Merrie-Woode spirit.
Closing Campfire concluded with the reflective song, Like A Tiny Spark of Fire. Afterwards, we all lined the swim docks and listened to an empowering prayer written by Dammie Day and her daughter, Ruth. As I watched from a high pine tree, I looked around at all of the campers standing hand in hand and was reminded how lucky I am to call this place home. I love sharing my home with these girls year after year, and I am glad they were able to be here for the best summer ever!
All is well, safely rest,
Tajar
